BANGLADESH: JMBF and SIL Express Deep Concern Over Recommendation to Remove 'Sharifa's Tale' from Seventh-Grade Textbook

Paris, France: France-based human rights organizations JusticeMakers Bangladesh in France (JMBF) and Solidarity International LGBTQI+ (SIL) express deep concern over the recent recommendation by the expert committee formed by the Ministry of Education of Bangladesh to remove "Sharifa's Tale" from the seventh-grade social science textbook.

JMBF and SIL strongly urge the Ministry of Education to reject this recommendation from the biased committee. Instead, they call for the formation of a new committee led by a Justice of the High Court Division of the Bangladesh Supreme Court. This new committee should include education specialists, social scientists, and members of civil society to thoroughly investigate the content in question.

According to a report published in Daily Prothom Alo on May 17, 2024, the high-level expert committee of the Ministry of Education submitted its report recommending the removal of "Sharifa's Tale" from the chapter on similarities and differences between people in the seventh-grade history and social science books. The committee cited various inaccuracies as reasons for their recommendation. The Ministry of Education is now considering its next steps.

Transgender Individual Found Dead in Apparent Suicide in Gazipur

In a tragic incident on April 17, 2023, the lifeless body of Abdul Mannan Ananya (22), a transgender individual, was discovered hanging in a rented house in Gazipur's Sreepur area. The distressing occurrence unfolded within Dhanua village of Sreepur upazila in Gazipur.

Abdul Mannan Ananya, the deceased, hailed from Dakshin Bartopa village of Mauna Union in Sripur Upazila, being the son of Nurul Amin. He had been residing on rent in the residence of Tofazzal Hossain, a resident of Dhanua village.

JMBF and SIL believe the arrest of the two lesbian women, who wished to marry, is a grave violation of their fundamental human rights and dignity as declared in the Constitution of the People's Republic of Bangladesh and the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR).

Can we evade accountability for the death of transgender model Radia Teherin Utsha?

On Monday, April 22, 2024, Radia Teherin Utsha, a 19-year-old transgender model, tragically ended her life by jumping from the sixth-floor roof of Byatikram Mahila Hostel in Mirpur, Dhaka. Radia, a student in the honors first year at Mirpur Bangla College, took this drastic step.

The recent suicides of transgender individuals in Bangladesh, including Radia Tehrin Uthso who tragically took her own life, serve as stark reminders of the urgent need for societal change. The young woman was seriously injured after leaping from the female hostel located at Mahua Manzil, Mirpur-10. It has been revealed that Radia had been concealing her transgender identity during her six-month stay at the hostel.

Trans woman dies allegedly by suicide

A trans woman died after falling from a six-storey girls' hostel in the capital's Mirpur area on Monday night.

The deceased was identified as Radiya Tehrin Utsho, 19, a student of Bangla at Mirpur College and daughter of Saiful Islam from Jamalpur's Bakshiganj upazila.

Utsho had made history as the first trans woman to get a "yes card" in the "Miss Evergreen Bangladesh" pageant last September.

She died after falling from the roof of "Betikrom Girls Hostel" in Mirpur-10, where she had been staying for the past six months.

একসঙ্গে বাসাভাড়া দুই মাদরাসাছাত্রীর, ছিল বিয়ের পরিকল্পনা

টাঙ্গাইলের গোপালপুরের রামপুর চতিলা গ্রামের দাখিল পড়ুয়া এক ছাত্রীর বাড়িতে তার প্রেমের টানে ছুটে এলো কিশোরগঞ্জের কটিয়াদীর আলিম পড়ুয়া আরেক ছাত্রী। এ ঘটনায় এলাকায় ব্যাপক চাঞ্চল্যের সৃষ্টি হয়েছে। পুলিশ দুজনকেই উদ্ধার করে টাঙ্গাইল আদালতে পাঠিয়েছে। 

জানা যায়, টাঙ্গাইলের গোপালপুর উপজেলার চতিলা গ্রামে মাদরাসা ছাত্রীর সঙ্গে একবছর আগে কিশোরগঞ্জে কটিয়াদীর আলিম পড়ুয়া মেয়ের ফেসবুকে পরিচয় হয়। একপর্যায়ে উভয়ের মধ্যে প্রেমের সম্পর্ক গড়ে ওঠে। গেল বছরের আগস্টে টাঙ্গাইলের মেয়ের বাড়িতে আসে কিশোরগঞ্জে মেয়েটি। বান্ধবী পরিচয়ে একসঙ্গে তারা রাত্রিযাপন করে। এর ধারাবাহিকতায় ৩দিন আগে টাঙ্গাইলের মেয়েটির বাড়িতে আবারও চলে আসে কিশোরগঞ্জের মেয়েটি। উভয়ে উপজেলা স্বাস্থ্য কমপ্লেক্স সংলগ্ন এলাকায় ১৫০০ টাকায় বাসা ভাড়া নেয়। তাদের চলাফেরা সন্দেহজনক মনে হলে স্থানীয়রা পুলিশকে খবর দেন। রোববার রাতে পুলিশ এসে তাদের জিজ্ঞাসাবাদ করলে তারা প্রেমের সম্পর্কের কথা স্বীকার করে এবং বিয়ে করার সিদ্ধান্তের কথা জানায়।

মহিলা হোস্টেলের ছাদ থেকে পড়ে ছাত্রীর আত্মহত্যা

রাজধানীর মিরপুরে মহিলা হোস্টেলের ছয়তলা ছাদ থেকে পড়ে রাদিয়া তেহরিন (১৯) নামে এক শিক্ষার্থীর মৃত্যু হয়েছে। তিনি মিরপুর বাংলা কলেজের ছাত্রী।

২২ এপ্রিল, সোমবার রাত ৮টার দিকে মিরপুর-১০ এর মহুয়া মঞ্জিল ব্যতিক্রম মহিলা হোস্টেলের ৬ তলা থেকে লাফিয়ে নীচে পড়ে গুরুতর আহত হন রাদিয়া। পরে তাকে উদ্ধার করে শহীদ সোহরাওয়ার্দী হাসপাতাল জরুরি বিভাগে নেয়া হলে কর্তব্য চিকিৎসক তাকে মৃত ঘোষণা করেন।

শ্রীপুরে এক হিজড়ার আত্মহত্যা

গাজীপুর: জেলার গাজীপুর ইউনিয়নের ধনুয়া গ্রামে মানসিক চাপে আব্দুল মান্নান অনন্যা (২২) নামের এক হিজড়া (তৃতীয় লিঙ্গ) আত্মহত্যা করেছে। পুলিশ মরদেহ উদ্ধার করেছে।

গতকাল বুধবার (১৭ এপ্রিল) রাতে শ্রীপুর উপজেলার গাজীপুর ইউনিয়নের ধনুয়া গ্রামে ওই হিজড়া (তৃতীয় লিঙ্গ) আত্মহত্যা করে ।

নিহত আব্দুল মান্নান অনন্যা উপজেলার মাওনা ইউনিয়নের দক্ষিণ বারতোপা গ্রামের নূরুল আমিনের (তৃতীয় লিঙ্গ )সন্তান। তিনি ধনুয়া গ্রামের তোফাজ্জল হোসেনের বাড়িতে ভাড়া থাকতেন। তার মরদেহ উদ্ধারের বিষয় নিশ্চিত করেন শ্রীপুর থানার উপপরিদর্শক (এসআই) আবু রায়হান।

অবশেষে ইউটিউব থেকে সরানো হলো নাটক ‘রূপান্তর’

নানা সমালোচনার মুখে অবশেষে ইউটিউব থেকে সরানো হলো নাটক ‘রূপান্তর’। ফারহান আহমেদ জোভান অভিনীত এটি ছিল ঈদের নাটক।

মূলত ট্রান্সজেন্ডার ইস্যু নিয়ে নাটকটি বানানো হয়েছে। মঙ্গলবার (১৬ এপ্রিল) দিনভর নাটকটি নিয়ে সামাজিক মাধ্যমে আলোচনা-সমালোচনা চলতে থাকে। অনেকে বলেছেন ট্রান্সজেন্ডার ইস্যুকে কেন্দ্র করে না জেনেই পরিচালক মনগড়া কথা বলছেন। কেউ কেউ বলেছেন নাটকে ট্রান্সজেন্ডার কনসেপ্টকেই প্রচারণা করা হয়েছে। সমালোচনার মুখে একান্ন মিডিয়ার ইউটিউব থেকে নাটকটি সরিয়ে নেওয়া হলো। তবে নাটকটির পরিচালক রাফাত মজুমদার রিঙ্কুর কোনো মন্তুব্য পাওয়া যায়নি।

ট্রান্সজেন্ডার বিষয়ক ‘রূপান্তর’ নাটক ঘিরে যে নাটকীয়তা

সম্প্রতি ট্রান্সজেন্ডার বা রূপান্তরিত লিঙ্গের মানুষদের নিয়ে তৈরি ‘রূপান্তর’ নামের একটি নাটক ইউটিউবে প্রকাশিত হওয়ার ২৪ ঘণ্টারও কম সময়ের ব্যবধানে সরিয়ে নিয়েছে প্রযোজনা প্রতিষ্ঠান।

সেইসাথে, নাটকের পৃষ্ঠপোষক ওয়ালটন ইতোমধ্যে এক ফেসবুক পোস্টে দুঃখ প্রকাশ বলেছে, নাটকের বিষয়বস্তু সম্পর্কে তাদের জানা ছিল না। যাদের সাথে নাটকের স্পন্সর করার বিষয়ে চুক্তি হয়েছিল, সেই বিজ্ঞাপনী সংস্থা ‘লোকাল বাস এন্টারটেইনমেন্ট’কে তারা আইনি নোটিশও পাঠিয়েছে।

Paris, France; March 16, 2024: JusticeMakers Bangladesh in France (JMBF) expressed profound concern regarding the recent detention of a married lesbian couple by the Mongla police station in Bargethat. The detention followed a homophobic local public protest against the couple's expression of their sexual orientation and their marriage on April 13, 2024.

The France-based rights organization is deeply troubled by the police's actions in detaining the couple for 24 hours solely because of their decision to marry as a same-sex couple. JMBF views this incident as a blatant violation of the couple's constitutional rights and their dignity.

ভালোবাসার টানে মেয়ে-মেয়ে ‌‌‘বিয়ে’, আটক করল পুলিশ

টিকটকে নারায়ণগঞ্জের এক তরুণীর সঙ্গে পরিচয় হয় বাগেরহাটের আরেক তরুণীর। সেই থেকে গড়ে ওঠে বন্ধুত্ব, ভালো সম্পর্ক। একপর্যায়ে ওরা প্রেমে পড়েন একে অপরের। বিয়ে করে সারা জীবন একসঙ্গে থাকবেন বলেও শপথ করেন। অবশেষে যেই কথা সেই কাজ! নারায়ণগঞ্জের তরুণী চলে যান বাগেরহাট। করেন বিয়ে! বিষয়টি স্থানীয়রা মানতে না পেরে থানায় জানান। পরে পুলিশ এসে তাদের আটক করে।

Paris, France; April 7, 2024: JusticeMakers Bangladesh in France (JMBF) strongly condemns the recent conviction and imprisonment of five individuals from the transgender/third gender/hijra community on charges of extortion and public disturbance at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, Dhaka, on April 6, 2024.

France-based Rights Organization JMBF believes that this action, aimed at the sexual minority transgender/hijra/third gender community, will exacerbate the marginalization of an already vulnerable group in society and perpetuate harmful stereotypes, failing to address the root causes of their alleged behavior and activities.

চাঁদাবাজির অভিযোগে তৃতীয় লিঙ্গের পাঁচজনকে সাজা

রাজধানীর হজরত শাহজালাল আন্তর্জাতিক বিমানবন্দর এলাকায় চাঁদাবাজি ও গণউপদ্রবের অভিযোগে তৃতীয় লিঙ্গের পাঁচজনকে এক মাস করে কারাদণ্ড দিয়েছেন ভ্রাম্যমাণ আদালত। শনিবার তাঁদের এ সাজা দেওয়া হয়।

কোতয়ালী থানার ভারপ্রাপ্ত কর্মকর্তা (ওসি) ইয়াসির আরাফাত খান প্রথম আলোকে এ তথ্য নিশ্চিত করেছেন। দণ্ডিত পাঁচজন হলেন বাবলি (২৪), অপু আক্তার (৩০), রিয়া চক্রবর্তী (১৮), কেয়া মনি (২৪) ও রানু মন্ডল (১৮)।
