URGENT APPEAL: Request for Prompt Action on Alleged Police Torture in Barisal

Mr. Asaduzzaman Khan, M.P.
Honorable Minister
Ministry of Home Affairs
Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh
Bangladesh Secretariat, Dhaka-1000
Email: minister@mha.gov.bd

Greetings from the human rights organization Justicemakers Bangladesh in France (JMBF)!

Justicemakers Bangladesh in France (JMBF), established on the principles of the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights (Bill of Rights), has been continuously dedicated to the protection and promotion of human rights since its inception. It is the constitutional sacred duty of the state to uphold the fundamental rights, including human rights, of every citizen of Bangladesh.

On 8th June 2024, according to the news broadcasted on Somoy TV, it was reported that on the evening of 30th May 2024, Mehdi Hasan Mithu, a resident of Mandupasha village in Uzirpur, Barisal district, was sitting in his yard playing Ludo on his mobile phone with friends. At that time, Sub-Inspector Antar Ahmed of Uzirpur Police Station, along with two other policemen, arrived there and accused them of gambling on mobile phones. During the ensuing argument, SI Antar began hitting Mithu randomly on his head and neck with the butt of his revolver. At one point, SI Antar threatened to shoot by inserting the barrel of the gun into Mithu's mouth and attempted to strangle him. Neighbors rushed to the scene upon hearing Mithu's cries for help, and SI Antar threatened to arrest Mithu for gambling. Later, SI Antar allegedly released Mithu after taking a bribe of twenty thousand taka. Subsequently, the injured Mehdi Hasan Mithu was admitted to Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College and Hospital and is still undergoing treatment there.

This incident is extremely unfortunate, illegal, and a clear violation of the Constitution of the People's Republic of Bangladesh and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights declared by the United Nations.

Justicemakers Bangladesh in France (JMBF) believes that you will take necessary actions through direct intervention to ensure proper investigation and appropriate measures against the accused to establish the rule of law and human rights in Bangladesh.

We hope that through your prompt and effective action, the victim Mehdi Hasan Mithu will receive impartial investigation and justice.

In this regard, Justicemakers Bangladesh in France (JMBF) urgently requests your necessary steps to protect and promote human rights in this matter. We also request you to send a copy of the action report to the JMBF office.

Justicemakers Bangladesh in France (JMBAF) wishes you all the best in your endeavors.

Sincerely,
