'Voluntary gender changers' will not get admission in Dhaka University (DU) undergraduate programs under 'transgender or hijra' quota. However, students with gender diversity by birth can get admission in this quota.
This information was informed in a press release published by the public relations office of the university on Thursday (January 4). For the past few days, a group of university students have been demanding the cancellation of the word 'transgender' included in the admission notice. In that context, the university authorities have given this decision by explaining the 'transgender/hijra' quota.
It is said in the circular that in view of the letter of some students of Dhaka University on December 21, there has been confusion in the public mind regarding the admission of transgender/hijra quota in the undergraduate program.
In order to resolve this confusion, the Dhaka University authorities clearly inform that, as per the decision of the Academic Council from the 2022-2023 session, a transgender/hijra quota has been introduced in Dhaka University undergraduate programs.
Only students who are gender diverse by birth can apply for admission under the transgender/hijra quota. In that case, Hijra identity card issued by Social Service Directorate of Government (Gazette No. Sakam/Karma-1sha/Hijra-15-2013-40) must be submitted for quota identification.
After adding transgender to the word Hijra in the 2023-24 academic year, a group of students formed a human chain and gave a memorandum to the Vice-Chancellor at Raju Bhaskar of Dhaka University on December 21 to withdraw the word. They held a press conference on this issue on December 30. On January 3, these students held a sit-in program for four hours at Raju Bhaskar.
