INDIA-BANGLADESH: JMBF Condemns Killing of Bangladeshi Citizen by Indian Border Security Force at Kumilla

Paris, France: June 11, 2024 - Justice Makers Bangladesh in France (JMBF), a France-based human rights organization, expresses profound concern and vehemently protests the killing of Bangladeshi citizen Anowar Hossain at the Jamtla Indian border area of Burichong upazila in Comilla on Sunday, June 9, 2024, by the Indian Border Security Force (BSF).

JMBF strongly condemns this egregious act of violence against an unarmed civilian along the India-Bangladesh border, which represents a blatant violation of human rights. JMBF demands immediate attention and action from the both India and Bangladesh government to provide exemplary punishment to the perpetrators involved in such gross human rights violations.

According to various Bangladeshi newspapers, Anowar Hossain (50), son of Charu Mia of Mirpur village in Burichong upazila, was killed by BSF firing at the Jamtla Indian border area of Burichong upazila in Comilla at 8 am on Sunday, June 9, 2024. He was shot while bringing sugar from India. Anowar Hossain attempted to enter India illegally on Friday morning, at which time BSF members fired at him, causing fatal bullet injuries. Anwar worked as a laborer transporting smuggled sugar from India.

Advocate Shahanur Islam, Founder President of JMBF, underscores the urgency of addressing this grave violation and calls on the Indian government to stop all kinds of violence at the border. He urges the implementation of standard procedures prioritizing the protection of civilians, as the indiscriminate use of lethal weapons against civilians is unacceptable and must be met with swift and decisive action.

JMBF demands that the BSF immediately revise its border policy to prohibit the use of lethal force against unarmed individuals, even in the context of suspected smuggling activities. JMBF also urges the international community to come together to ensure that justice is served and to take steps to prevent further bloodshed in the region.

In solidarity with the victims and their families, JMBF stands resolute in its commitment to defending human rights and promoting peace along the India-Bangladesh border. JMBF also urges the provision of psychological and financial support to the family of the deceased, Anowar Hossain.
