STATEMENT: JusticeMakers Bangladesh gravely concerned over the recent threats against Mr. Shahanur Islam

On October 10, 2011, Mr. Shahanur Islam, Country Observer for Bangladesh, Global Human Rights Defence, the Hague, Netherlands; Co-Founder of a human rights organization for legal aid, rehabilitation and awareness "Justicemakers Bangladesh", Executive Director of Bangladesh Institute of Human Rights (BIHR); Legal and Human Rights Editor for the Monthly Doyel and also member of Bangladesh Bar Council and Dhaka Bar Association received threats from an unknown youtube user "udoy1" threatening to be hang through Mr. Islam's youtube channel "saikotbihr" where Mr. Islam recently broadcasted a fact finding investigation on police torture on jumma student.

The perpetrators stated his massage that " This reporter should be hang. He is a active RAW (research and analysis, India) member. Where is our DGFI and NSI.....? What they are doing..?"

This is not a single incident of threats perpetrated against Mr. Islam. Mr. Islam has been received a numerous threats, life threats, physical attacked, assaulted, looted as well as arbitrary arrested due to his activities on upholding human rights especially ethnic and religious minority rights as well as prevent  torture, extrajudicial killing and organized violence  in many time previously. Recently, he has unprovoked been attacked and also received death thretas by a accused of criminal case. Though Mr. islam requested the assitant from the police authority, but not assistance has been provided by them for his aid. Even, the police authority did not file the FIR connecting his physical assault.

JusticeMakers Bangladesh and Bangladesh institute of Human Rights gravely concerned over the recent threats against Mr. Islam and demands impartial and prompt investigation of the incident as well as bring the culprit before the book as soon as arresting him.
